The individualized, “hands on” approach that characterizes physical therapy care is highly valued by patients. When a physical therapist sees a patient for the first time, he or she examines that individual and develops a plan of care that promotes the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent impairments or disability. The physical therapist and the patient then work as a team to establish goals and ensure those outcomes are met.
Therapeutic exercise, functional training, neuromuscular re-education, and manual therapy are the cornerstones of physical therapy treatment. Depending on the particular needs of a patient, your physical therapist may mobilize a joint (perform certain types of passive movements designed to improve joint mobility) or perform soft tissue mobilization (which may include massage, stretching, compression, and decompression of the muscle tissue) to promote healing for proper movement. We use the most advanced Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization techniques that include Hypervolt, Myofascial Decompression/Cupping, and IASTM. Functional training and therapeutic exercises will be provided with careful instruction to help the patient with improving strength and stability to increase mobility and function. We may also use advanced strengthening tools called Blood Flow Restriction to aid in your recovery. Physical therapists may use other techniques such as electrotherapy, taping to aide with neuromuscular re-education (including McConnell and Kinesio techniques), hot packs, ice, and ultrasound (high-frequency waves that produce heat) in addition to other treatments when appropriate.
Physical therapists will also work with individuals to prevent loss of mobility by developing fitness and wellness oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.
